General Cleaning and Sterilization Instructions for Reusable LMA™ Products

This area provides a summary of the most important aspects of cleaning and sterilization for reusable LMA™ products. For specific LMA™ airway information, please refer to current LMA™ Instruction Manuals.

Click here to view the Taking Care of Reusable LMA™ Airways Video. The video can also be ordered by contacting Customer Service.

These instructions are applicable to the following reusable airways:

LMA™ Airways
Accessories
LMA Classic™
LMA ProSeal™ Introducer
LMA ProSeal™
LMA ProSeal™ Cuff-Deflator
LMA Fastrach™
LMA Fastrach™ ETT
LMA Flexible™
LMA Fastrach™ Stabilizer Rod
LMA CTrach™
LMA™ Airway Cuff-Deflator

Step 1 - General Cleaning Instructions

Wash the LMA™ airway in warm water with a mild detergent, or a dilute sodium bicarbonate solution. Do not expose the valve to any cleaning solution. A specific cleaner found to be compatible with LMA™ airway use is Endozime® (Ruhof, Valley Stream, NY).

Do not expose the white plastic valve to any cleaning solution as it may cause premature valve failure

WARNING: Do not expose the LMA™ airway to germicides, disinfectants, or any agents containing glutaraldehyde, phenol, iodine, or quaternary ammonium compounds. Such substances are absorbed by the LMA™ airway materials, resulting in exposure of the patient to potentially severe tissue burns and possible deterioration of the LMA™ airway. Do not use an LMA™ airway that has been exposed to any of these substances.

Cleaning Solutions NOT to Use with LMA™ Airways

Glutaraldehyde or Ortho-phthalaldehyde Cidex®, Cidex OPA®, Wavicide®
Quaternary Ammonium A-33 Dry®, CIDA-FOAM™, Coverage® Plus, Power Keg®, T.B.Q®
Phenols Amerse®, Beaucoup®, LpH® se, Lysol® IC, Matar®, Vesta-Syde®, Vesphene II® se
Iodine Betadine®

Note: Representative list only

Step 2 - Product Specific Cleaning Instructions

When cleaning the LMA ProSeal™ with manual vent, the red plug should be in the closed position (Figure A).

Clean the airway and drain tubes of the LMA ProSeal™ with a soft bristle brush. Ensure the areas behind the Introducer strap and under the internal drain tube are clean (Figure B).

The airway tubes of the LMA Fastrach™ and LMA Fastrach Endotracheal Tube should also be carefully cleaned using a soft brush. Carefully clean the area around the LMA Fastrach's™ epiglottic elevating bar (EEB), taking care not to damage the bar (Figure C). Ensure the whole interior of the metal tube is thoroughly cleaned.

The LMA Classic™ and LMA Flexible™ airway tubes may be cleaned by carefully inserting a soft bristle brush through the aperture bars, being careful not to damage them.

Note: LMA North America sells cleaning brushes for the LMA ProSeal™. For all other LMA™ reusable airways LMA North America recommends a ½" cleaning brush made by Justman Brush Company - part # 1701, phone (800) 800-6940.

Step 3 - Rinsing

Thoroughly rinse the cuff and airway tube in warm flowing tap water to remove cleaning residues.

Ensure the LMA™ airway is dry. If moisture is noted inthe valve or inside the manual vent of the LMA™ ProSeal, tap against a towel to remove excess moisture before autoclaving.

Step 4 - Inspection

Carefully inspect the LMA™ airway (and drain tube on the LMA ProSeal™) to ensure that all visible foreign matter has been removed. Repeat Steps 1, 2 and 3 as necessary.

WARNING: Failure to properly clean, rinse and dry an LMA™ airway may result in retention of potentially hazardous residue or inadequate sterilization.

Step 5 - Sterilization Preparation

Steam autoclaving is the only recommended method of sterilization for LMA™ airways.

WARNING: Do not expose the LMA™ airway to ethylene oxide and do not use a LMA device™ that has been exposed to ethylene oxide.

Immediately prior to autoclaving the LMA Classic™, LMA Flexible™, LMA Fastrach™ or LMA ProSeal™ without manual vent, fully deflate the LMA™ airway cuff using a clean, dry syringe. Remove syringe from valve before autoclaving to avoid damage to valve. LMA Cuff-Deflators™ available from LMA North America may be used to help achieve complete deflation.

CAUTION: Any air or moisture left in the cuff will expand in the high temperature and low pressure environment of the autoclave, causing irreparable damage to the cuff and/or inflation pilot balloon.

For the LMA ProSeal with manual vent, it is not necessary to deflate the cuff prior to steam autoclaving provided the red vent plug is in the open position (Figure D). Note that after autoclaving, the cuff of the LMA ProSeal™ with Manual Vent will be inflated.

Step 6 - Autoclaving

Steam autoclave the LMA™ airway following the manufacturer's recommendations and applicable institution and industry guidelines for temperature and time.

Minimum Exposure times
All cycles 270° - 275° F (132° - 135° C)

Autoclave Wrapped Unwrapped (Flash)
Gravity Displacement 10-15 minutes 10 minutes*
Prevacuum 3 - 4 minutes 4 minutes*

*Mixed porous and nonporous items

Step 7 - Record Keeping

Record LMA™ airway use on record card. The record card is provided with the purchase of every reusable LMA™ airway

The user should perform all the pre-use tests before each use of the device. Failure of any test indicates the device has passed its useful life and should be replaced.
